Sprague Friendship Club will have a speaker on Identity Theft: Your Identity between work and play, Ryan Sothan, outreach coodinator, Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection & Anti-Trust Division. Identity Theft is now – and for the past 16 consecutive years has been – the nation’s leading consumer complaint. Identity theft occurs when someone – often a family member, relative, neighbor or friend – appropriates your personal identifying information – for example your Social Security number, date of birth, account numbers – and uses it to commit fraud or theft.
The purpose of this presentation is to help Nebraskans of all ages learn what identity theft is, how it occurs, by whom, for what purpose and what to do when – not if – it happens to you. Prevention measures include routinely monitoring one’s billing statements and credit, timely reporting whenever personal information is lost or stolen and safeguarding against future financial losses by placing a Fraud Alert and/or a Security Freeze on your credit file.
This meeting will be at the Sprague Community Church at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 19. Everyone is invited to attend that evening. Hope to see a lot of you there.
