Gary Ritterbush speaks during a golf course committee meeting Monday. The committee addressed the deteriorating walking path at the golf course.

MITCHELL – The walking path at Scenic Knolls Golf Course is in disrepair to the point that an afternoon stroll is dangerous.

That was what golf course members said in a meeting held Monday.

Committee Chairman Gary Ritterbush said he recently walked the path and noticed a number of gopher holes, and that the ground is exceedingly soft in a number of places.

City Administrator Jeff Sprock also walked the path.

“I almost busted my leg out there,” Sprock said during the meeting.

Suggestions for improving the path included working with conservation organizations like Pheasants Forever to plant native plants.

“It’s a beautiful area,” Ritterbush said.

There may be grant monies available too if the city installed plants that were friendly to pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Committee members also explored the possibility of extending golf cart paths at the golf course. Each path would cost about $5,000 to extend. Area golfers will have the opportunity to sponsor the project.
