Holden Schleve wrestles for the Lions during the Bronco Invite on Saturday at Mullen.

MULLEN – The Morrill and Minatare wrestling teams competed at the Bronco Invite in Mullen on Saturday.

The Lions came in one point out of first place as they scored 128. Mullen took first place with 129 and Bayard was third with 113. Minatare was seventh with 48 points.

“It was a good way to start out the season,” Morrill head coach Willie Schwartzkopf said.  “Many of the teams at Mullen are out of our D-4 district. The team race was as expected, I knew it would be us and Mullen with Bayard right in there. We are still missing two returning qualifiers from last season that are yet to wrestle due to some injuries. Getting them back will boast our scores team wise a bit more.”

Morrill’s four champions were Tyler Nagel at 106, Nathaniel Murillo at 113, Austin Garcia at 160 and Will Howell at 182. Runner-up went to Holden Schleve at 145 and third-place finishes were turned in by Shea Webb at 126 and Bryce Seir at 152.

Minatare was led by Isaac Gomez, who came in first place at 195 pounds. Ceasar Garduno came in second at 285 and Dan Gonzalez at 182 and Carlos Martinez at 132 both placed fifth.

Last Thursday, Morrill was able to host its first home dual in more than 10 years against Hemingford and the Lions came out victorious.
