MITCHELL – After at least a five-month period of not meeting due to not having enough members appointed, the Mitchell LB840 committee last week met to consider application that had been submitted by local businesses seeking economic development money that is raised through sales tax collected in Mitchell.

Members Cindi Taylor, Mike Olsen, Susan Williams, Kent Halley and Gary Ritterbush recommended awarding about $10,000 in grants to three businesses. Mitchell City Council members must approve the grants before the businesses can receive the money.

Businesses that the committee recommended to receive money included Edna’s Place, a new restaurant in Mitchell, and longtime businesses, Bunkhouse Trailers and Hickman -Williams Insurance Agency, Inc.

The committee did not recommend a grant for The Voice News weekly community newspaper, which had submitted a grant looking for money to help locate an office in Mitchell and continue to grow its business that came to town in August 2016 after The Index shut its doors following a more than 110-year run in Mitchell.

Mitchell City Administrator Jeff Sprock said The Voice News was turned down due to not having an office in Mitchell.

Sprock said the committee encouraged The Voice News to reapply for the grant a third time upon opening a storefront.

“The committee wanted to see more of a presence,” Sprock said.

Since turning in its grant application back in October 2016, The Voice News has added a local reporter who lives in Mitchell and also become the official publication for the City of Mitchell and Mitchell Public Schools.

The Voice News is currently run out of local reporter Zach Spadt’s apartment in Mitchell.

“I am puzzled by the committee’s decision to not recommend a grant for our business as we were asking for help trying to fill one of these empty buildings in town,” said Darren Ivy, who is the co-publisher of The Voice News.
