The Mitchell Airfield was bustling with action on Saturday and Sunday as Mike and Colleen Johnson of High Plains Hot Air Balloon hosted four competition balloons and their owners, who wanted to get in some practice for the National Hot Air Balloon Festival as well as the Old West Balloon Fest, which will include a competition section this year. “It was fun to see because these competition balloons look a little bit different than normal ones,” Colleen said.  Volunteers from Mitchell and the surrounding area came out to assist with getting the balloons set up and measuring during the competition. Local resident Anja Knepper even ended up going up in one. “I had not intended to ‘crew,’ just to help score. I am afraid of heights. Clayton Crouch asked me spur of the moment. That I dared to go was a surprise - to me!”
