MORRILL – Every few years the Oregon Trail Days in Gering and Horsecreek Rendezvous in Morrill fall on the same weekend.

The Morrill event is always the third week of July but the Oregon Trail Days bounces around dates.

“It’s just something we have to contend with every once in a while,” said Virgil Ritz of Morrill.

Despite the competition for entertainment from its neighbors in Gering, Horsecreek Rendezvous Day organizers were still happy with the turnout.

“I don’t think we are down too much at all in terms of the meals served and the crowds,” commented co-chairman Pete Cawiezel.

A 5K and 1 mile run started the day, followed by a tour of town, the bicycle parade and main parade that featured more than 100 entries.

Following the parade, the Morrill American Legion Auxiliary served hamburgers in the park and there were fun activities and live music.

Other highlights were a car show, entertainment and food in the park, an open house at the new Morrill early childhood development center, an open house at the Morrill Museum, a beach ball toss at the Morrill Swimming Pool and free open swimming.

The Morrill merchants served free barbecue while the string band played in the park.

A street dance to the music of Southern Fryed capped off the evening in downtown Morrill.

There also were several Morrill High School class reunions that were held during the weekend of activities.
